1984 - ¨Ignorance is Strength"
George Orwell's ¨1984¨ begins with a cold open which introduces both the protagonist, Winston Smith, and an omnipresent theme of paranoia via authoritarian panopticon. Oceania is a surveillance state run by members of the English Socialism (or Ingsoc) party. There are no longer any explicit laws, only the thought police. The party manipulates information to their will, claiming falsehoods to be true, such as their invention of the airplane. Even going so far as to invent the language of Newspeak with deliberate linguistic conventions that make heretical thought nigh impossible.
